Time Event
The Tenants
The Tenants

Our beachfront apartments slipped into the bay
The lobby is flooded like a cave
We fish from the slippery elevator shafts
A rectangular well that traps unfortunate rats

The fire-escapes are diving platforms
The second floor balconies are wharves
Up on the roof we hold communal meals
And joust with the seagulls over every crumb they steal

Patient sharks slalom in the windows
Their dorsal fins sawing through the waves
Landlocked cougars pace the barren shore
Hunger compels them to wade further out than before

How long can we stay here on our island
And graze on a shrinking patch of kelp?
The algae and barnacles have been scraped away
Soon, we'll have no choice but to leave the lonely bay
Let's hope we don't end up as prey
